Digital Textbooks

What are Digital Textbooks?

Simply put, digital textbooks are electronic replacements for traditional paper texts. EPISD feels that digital textbooks offer some advantages to our learners that older textbooks cannot offer.

6:27 use Office 365, that you go ahead and show themhow to setup OneDrive first. If you are a high. If you are a high. 6:32 school teacher, you will be doing this with them theday student laptops are distributed. All members of the EPISD family, including students, have access to Office 365. Students can log in to their Outlook and use Word, PowerPoint, Excel, and much more as long as the student is enrolled in EPISD. Students can access Office 365 from home by signing in at https://portal.office.com. A place where you can ask, help, and share. Common Core State Standards.

In the summer of 2014, EPISD began an ambitious program, along with our partner CK12.org, to replace high school science textbooks with free, electronic texts. Working with a team of teachers, the district created textbooks for high school Biology, Chemistry, Physics and IPC. These texts meet the exact same high standards of textbooks that come from traditional publishers, yet have the incredible price of being 100% free.

Students will be able to access these texts on a wide variety of devices including their own personal electronic device such as a smartphone or tablet, or a school provided laptop or device. (See the section on BYOD here.)

In addition to having text, the CK12 Flexbooks offer embedded videos, quizzes and other interactive features not available in a paper text.

Some Frequently Asked Questions.
A: Students will be issued electronic devices that will be capable of accessing the texts. You can also access them on your smartphone or almost any internet connected device.
A: Absolutely! EPISD would not provide students with inferior learning materials. The CK12 books are customized specifically for EPISD, match our curriculum in a way that no traditional publisher would be able to provide, and give our students a learning experience that we feel is far superior to traditional texts. CK12 Flexbooks go through the same writing and vetting process that major publishers use to create their textbooks.
A: EPISD started with high school science because this was a textbook adoption year and science textbooks were being adopted. It was a natural place to stop doing what we had always done, step back and ask ourselves 'Could we be doing something better for our students than what we always have done?' We looked at a wide variety of sources and eventually went with the resources in CK12.org. EPISD does plan to move to electronic versions of Math , Social Studies and English Language Arts in the coming years.
A: There are many places (including your school) that have free wifi internet. We have created a map of free hotspots in your neighborhood HERE. If you have absolutely no access, you can download your textbook as a PDF file for storage on your device.
Office
A: No. The Flexbook, just like any textbook in EPISD, is just another resource, one among many. Students and teachers can access a wide variety of learning materials, and the Flexbooks are just one of those.
A: There are many advantages: Price: Flexbooks are free, whereas traditional texts cost anywhere from $84 to $200 each. Interactivity: Flexbooks have embedded interactives, including lab simulations, videos, and quizzes. Changeability: Flexbooks can be changed rapidly if errors or better explanations are discovered. Teachers can even create their own custom book using the EPISD Flexbook as a backbone. Another neat feature of these books is that they can be translated immediately into over 30 languages including Spanish.
A: Creating the EPISD Flexbooks for Science was a truly collaborative effort between Instructional Technology, Curriculum and Instruction, and the CK12 organization.
A: CK12.org is an organization that is funded by the Khosla Family Foundation. CK12.org provides free textbooks in all of the STEM courses for anyone wishing to use them.
A: There is nothing 'wrong' with traditional textbooks. EPISD decided that it was time to move our students into a 21st Century Learning Environment, and doing things as they have always been perhaps was not the best way for our students way of learning. Good educators adapt their teaching methods to the way students learn, not the other way around. Electronic textbooks are a dynamic new way to present material to our students.
A: NO! No teachers can use the EPISD created science texts, or they can use older out-of-adoption texts. Of course, teachers CAN create their own FLexbooks if they wish, but that certainly is not required.

Certified Campuses

In the 2015-16 school year, the El Paso Independent School District earned the distinction of becoming a certified digital citizenship district as determined by Common Sense Education. The campuses listed below are certified digital citizenship schools. Each year we will recognize the schools who continue to achieve certified status by adding a star next to their names. This effort is in keeping with our district's dedication to teaching young people how to become responsible digital citizens who can effectively and safely use the resources of the Internet for communication, collaboration, research, and social networking.
